Jeff Hanneman was a founding member of SLAYER (1981), along with Kerry King, Dave Lombardo, and Tom Araya. He died exactly nine years ago, at the age of 49. Jeff had medical problems related to alcohol consumption, which was known to fans. And then at the end of 2011, Jeff was bitten by a spider while sitting in his backyard. Despite visiting various doctors and treatment, Jeff was affected by an infection that led to necrotic peritonitis; a disease that slowly ate away the skin on his hand and wrist.

One of the most important guitarists in the history of rock and metal, Jeff Hanneman remained a rather private figure, at least compared to his fellow friend and bandmate Kerry King. He was the punk of the band and crazy at parties.

Hanneman contributed both lyrical and musical material to every Slayer album up to and including 2009's World Painted Blood. His guitar-playing can be heard on many of Slayer's releases; he wrote both music and lyrics for "South of Heaven", "War Ensemble" and the Grammy Award-winning "Eyes of the Insane". He also wrote songs in collaboration with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya and lead guitarist Kerry King including "Mandatory Suicide", "Silent Scream" and "Postmortem", each credited under the name Hanneman/King/Araya. He wrote his own music and vocal parts.
