Metal treated as material rather than as a set of rules. Time signatures wander, instruments arrive from outside the band, and the singing may be operatic, spoken or absent. Celtic Frost opened the door with Into the Pandemonium in 1987 and Arcturus, Ved Buens Ende and Sigh went through it.
