Seattle, Sub Pop and 1991: Black Sabbath riffs played by people who owned punk records, sung by men who did not want the job. Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were closer to metal than anyone admitted at the time, and the whole thing swept the charts clear of everything metal had put there.
