Zeal and Ardor have put out a remix of Devil Is Fine, the title track of the album that started them, done by the darksynth producer Carpenter Brut.

It arrives a month after the anniversary edition. Devil Is Fine X came in September with the record remastered and five extra tracks, so the remix reads as the tail of that campaign rather than as new work, and the pairing is less unlikely than it looks: both acts build on a loop and a mood rather than on a riff.

What makes the choice of song pointed is what that song was. Manuel Gagneux built the project in New York by putting black metal against the music of American slavery, and has said the whole thing began from a question: what if American slaves had embraced Satan instead of Jesus. Devil Is Fine is where that question first turned into a record, and it is the one song in the catalogue that cannot be heard as a style exercise.

Handing it to a synth producer ten years on is a risk with an obvious upside. A remix of this track reaches an audience that would never open a black metal record, and the song itself survives the treatment because the hook was never the distortion.
