Chad Gray has described what is wrong with his voice, and it is more than a cold. The Mudvayne singer cancelled his solo shows at the House Of Blues in San Diego on 5 October and the Observatory OC in Santa Ana on 6 October. The tour is currently expected to resume on 7 October at the Fremont Country Club in Las Vegas.
He told the story in an interview transcribed by Blabbermouth. He flew into Nashville for rehearsals and his voice was not working, and he put it down to allergies, which in that city is a reasonable first guess. It got worse rather than better. His vocal coach told him she did not know what was going on, only that something was.
Four days before the interview he was scoped. One of his vocal folds is twice as wide as the other, which makes it heavier than the pair is meant to be, and he describes them as butterfly wings that are now hitting each other badly. There is a large broken blood vessel on the front of it, which means he haemorrhaged at some point and did not know it.
Asked whether he had coughed up blood, he said no, and then said he wished he had, because then he would at least know when it happened. Before these shows he had felt good about his voice, which is the part that frightens him.
