Alcest have a live album, their first, and the date on the cover is not the date of the recording. Live at Hellfest 2022 comes out on 4 December through Nuclear Blast, four years after the set it holds.
That gap says something about how the band works. The set was played before Les Chants de l'Aurore existed, so the running order stops at 2019 and reaches back to the 2007 debut Souvenirs d'un autre monde, with Spiritual Instinct as the most recent record represented. Anyone buying it is buying a specific evening rather than a summary of the band as it stands now.
The first piece of it is out: Protection, in audio and as a live video from the same performance. It is a song that depends on the room, which is the argument for a live album from a band whose records are built in layers.
Nineteen years of releases and no live album until now is unusual for a band at this level, and the explanation is probably that Alcest on record is a studio project with a band attached rather than the other way round. The timing is practical too. They are finishing an autumn North American run as special guests to Mastodon, and they have twenty two European and British dates booked for spring 2027, so a live record arrives into a year of touring rather than instead of one.
