Amanda Somerville has given her own account of where the treatment has got to, and the short version is that it seems to be working.

"Right now, I'm in my last 2 of 6 weeks of proton beam radiation therapy and I'm more tired than I've ever been in my life," she wrote. "But I'm here and things seem to be working. I can talk again. My fingers want to write. I can keep a coherent thought."

The tumour she named herself is malignant, aggressive and inoperable, which makes the sentence about buying time the one that matters: "If I can keep this going, I just might buy enough time to jump to the next thing that works and go from there."

She thanks the people who wrote to her, says she read all of it into the early hours, and finishes the way she has finished every statement so far. "Failure is NOT an option. When my little girls hug me, I feel defiant and the power is rising. They need their Mama! I will ANNIHILATE this thing!"

Her voice is on records by Epica, Kamelot, Avantasia, After Forever, Ayreon and Edguy, and she still fronts Trillium and Kiske/Somerville. Half of European symphonic metal has her somewhere in its credits.
