Anatomia and Purulency have put out a self titled split through Pulverised Records, and it is two covers rather than two new songs.
Anatomia take "Brainspoon", by Funebre, the Finnish band whose single album from 1991 is one of the records this whole corner of death metal keeps pointing back to. Purulency take "Pilgrimage From Darkness", from Amorphis, which is a different kind of borrowing: that song comes from a band who left this sound behind almost immediately afterwards.
The pairing says something. Anatomia have been working out of Japan since 2002, at the slowest end of death doom, with four albums and more than forty releases behind them, most of them splits with bands exactly like this one. Purulency are American and eight years old.
A split made of covers is a statement about lineage rather than about either band, which is the oldest use the format has.
