Brann Dailor has explained what Mastodon built Marrow Deep out of. Speaking to The Downbeat Podcast, hosted by Stray From The Path drummer Craig Reynolds, he said the album turns on the Three Fates of Greek mythology, which is also where the cover art comes from, and on two deaths in the same stretch of time.
"I just looked at the similarities between Brent and my mom," he said. "These are two people that we thought they had nine lives." His mother died in February 2025. Brent Hinds died roughly a year before the album came out in August, a few months after the rest of the band had removed him.
That sequence is the part nobody in the band has had an easy way to talk about, and Dailor does not smooth it over. He describes Hinds as someone who kept walking into the deep end and expecting the others to follow.
The estate has since sued the band, which makes any public word about Hinds a careful one. Marrow Deep is the first Mastodon album with Nick Johnston on guitar, recorded at the band's own West End Sound in Atlanta with Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, and mixed by Andrew Scheps.
