Burton C. Bell, who sang on it, will mark thirty years of Fear Factory's Obsolete with three spoken word events in October, in San Diego, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
"Obsolete By Word Of Mouth" is not billed as a concert. It is the story of the album told by the person who wrote the lyrics for it, in small rooms, and it comes with a condition attached: the audience is asked to put their phones away for the duration. No filming, no posting, no documenting.
That condition is the point rather than a rule bolted onto it. The presentation is built around the way a story travelled before the internet, when what people saw at an event reached everyone else by being repeated rather than uploaded, and the title says as much.
There is a certain symmetry in a record about industrial dehumanisation being commemorated by asking a room full of people to stop looking at their screens.
