Soulfly closed the last day of Aftershock in Sacramento on 4 October with Jakobe Moreno singing Pain. He is the son of Chino Moreno, who recorded the song with Max Cavalera for Primitive in 2000, and he sang his father's part.
The song is one of two Chino Moreno made with Cavalera around the turn of the century, and both were written for Dana Wells, Cavalera's stepson, who died in a car accident in 1996. Behind Jakobe on the drums was Zyon Cavalera, Max's son.
Gloria Cavalera put the thing that makes it a story rather than a guest spot. "When Chino's son was born, Dana told me someday he's going to play with Zyon," she wrote. "And Dana was right because there was Zyon right behind Kobe on the drums. Legendary moment." On the performance itself she was briefer. "Hot damn, what a voice. He rolled that track up perfectly."
Jakobe is not a guest pulled out of the crowd; he has played Aftershock before with his own band, Death Rogen. Soulfly carry on through California, Nevada and Arizona until 15 October.
