Devin Townsend will have The Moth played in full surround at Polygon Live in London on 16 December, on an L-Acoustics system, with the audience inside the speaker array.
Nobody plays. It is a listening session, which used to be how records were introduced to journalists and has quietly come back as something an audience will pay for. The places were offered to his Patreon subscribers first and what is left is almost gone.
For this record the format is less of a gimmick than it sounds. The Moth came out in May and is the most layered thing Townsend has made, an orchestral piece assembled from more parts than a stage can reproduce, and he has said as much about the cost of touring it.
A live version arrives first. The Moth (The War, Live in Groningen) is out on 6 November on CD, Blu-ray and digitally, which gives December's room something to compare against.
