Elysion have released "Dead Loves", the third song to come off Identity after "Guardian Angel" and "Phoenix". The album has been out since 16 October on Massacre Records.
"It is probably the most romantic song Elysion have ever written," says Christianna, the singer, and the band put the song in an openly gothic setting, with a retro sensibility sitting against the way they record now.
The idea underneath it is better than the usual single copy. Rather than treating love as something that fades into nothing, the song treats it as energy that cannot actually be destroyed, with memories and invisible attachments outliving the separation, which leaves the question the title is really asking: if it never fully dies, where does it go.
The band have been working out of Athens since 2006 and have spent most of that time on the same label, which in gothic metal is rarer than it sounds. Greece has produced a specific version of the style, less orchestral than the German and Finnish schools and more willing to let a keyboard carry a whole verse.
Three songs out of the record so far, all of them pointing the same way.
