Fir Bolg have released a lyric video for Vae Victis, from Triskelion, which Schwarzdorn Production puts out on 27 November.
The title is the phrase Brennus is supposed to have thrown at the Romans along with his sword, woe to the vanquished, and it is the third track on a record whose running order goes Yule, then Underground Chtonian Sacrifice, then this. A band who build their songs out of Celtic material rather than Norse are working a seam that is both older and less crowded.
What they do with it is still black metal rather than folk with a flute bolted on. The melodies come from somewhere else but the arrangement does not soften, and the lyric video exists because the words are half the point.
Schwarzdorn have handled a good deal of the European pagan end for years, so the album is in a sensible place. It lands on 27 November.
