Gaerea have released the second of their four versions of Shallow, and it could not be further from the first.

Yesterday the song went to Paranormal Attack and came back as dance music. Today it arrives acoustic, with Jo Quail playing cello on it, and the contrast is clearly the point of putting them out a day apart. Two collaborators remain unnamed.

Quail is the obvious person to call for this. She has spent years making cello records that sit beside metal rather than decorating it, and bands from Mono to Myrkur have borrowed her without turning her into string padding.

What the pair of versions says about the band is more interesting than either on its own. After a decade of keeping everything inside the masks, the Portuguese band are handing one song to strangers and publishing whatever comes back. Two down, two to go, with no dates announced.
