Gaerea have released a version of Shallow made with Paranormal Attack, a psytrance act from the same country, and it is the first of four.

The plan is not four new songs. It is one song, Shallow, taken apart four times by four different collaborators, and the band have named neither the remaining three nor the dates. What they have said is why: for their first decade they kept a tight grip on their own music, and this project is the opposite of that.

Putting a dance producer first is the loudest way to open that door. The contrast is the concept rather than an accident, and anyone who has watched this band play behind masks for ten years will understand how far it is from where they started. They tie the idea to Loss, the album Shallow sits on, which was already the record where the songs stopped behaving.

Whether the remaining three go further in the same direction or back toward the metal end, nobody is saying. That is most of the point of announcing a series rather than a single.
