Gitta Lindemann has died at the age of eighty seven. NDR, the German public broadcaster she worked for, reports that she died at her home in Northwest Mecklenburg on Saturday 24 October, and her family confirmed it.
She is known outside Germany as the mother of Rammstein's singer. Inside it she was a working journalist with a career of her own. Born Brigitte Lindemann on 11 April 1939, she ran NDR's cultural editorial department in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania through the 1990s and stayed in the job until she retired in 2002.
She kept writing. Her memoir Meine Fensterplatze came out in 2023, and earlier this year she presented a collection of poems, Lautlos, at the Leipzig Book Fair, at eighty seven.
Her husband was the writer Werner Lindemann, who died in 1993 and whose centenary was marked this month. Theirs was a literary household, publicly and sometimes painfully so, and both parents wrote about it.
NDR's own tribute calls her a curious, inspiring and humorous colleague whose interest in literature, theatre and music never let up.
