GWAR have announced GWAR and the Last Drive-In-Stein, a record made with Joe Bob Briggs, the drive in movie host, with songs written by John Brennan and the Bigfeet. Pit Records release it on vinyl on 13 November, and the first song, "Splatter-Fu", is out with a live video.
The premise is less random than it looks. Briggs has spent forty years introducing horror films on television, and GWAR have spent more than forty building a stage act out of the same material: rubber, gore, and a straight face held for the length of the joke. The two have been circling each other for decades on the same circuit of conventions and late night channels.
What is new here is that the songs are not theirs. Brennan wrote "Splatter-Fu" specifically for GWAR, which makes this a collaboration record rather than a guest appearance, and the band carrying someone else's writing is the part worth watching when the record arrives.
Vinyl only on announcement, through a small label rather than through the catalogue home that pressed Beyond Hell last year. For a band whose merchandise is half the business, a one format release is a calculation about who is going to buy this and why.
