Iapetus have released The Mother Void through Willowtip Records, who are streaming it in full.
Seven tracks, and the running times tell the story better than any description could. "Aniara" runs seventeen minutes and twelve seconds, "TON" eighteen minutes and forty three, and between them they take up more than half the record. Around those sit the title track at nearly thirteen minutes and "Red Giant" at twelve, with two short pieces, "Parturition" and "Enouement", bracketing the whole thing like breath marks.
That is a shape almost nobody attempts any more. Progressive death metal mostly settled into eight minute songs years ago because that is what a listener will sit through, and a band writing two eighteen minute pieces is making a different bet entirely.
They have been doing this from Long Island since 2010, and this is the third album. Willowtip have carried the technical and progressive end of American death metal for thirty years, which makes them close to the only label this record could have landed on.
