Illusion Of Fate have recorded Soulless Chasm a second time, five years after the first, and it closes Exsanguination, a three song EP due on 8 January.
Their reason for going back is the honest kind. The song was written and the shape of it was right, they say, but the recording from autumn 2020 never caught the atmosphere the idea had in it. Six years of writing later they thought they could finally do it, and they say the new version is what the song was always meant to be.
Bands re-record early material for all sorts of reasons, most of them to do with rights or with nostalgia. Doing it because the first take did not sound like what was in your head is a different and rarer motive.
The words are about standing in front of something far too large to understand, with darkness and empty space as the images for losing your own outline. They say the song ends the EP without resolving anything on purpose.
They formed in Milwaukee in 2019 and have nine releases behind them, two of them albums.
