Two throwaway phrases and a rhyme built the song. Armored Saint have released a visualizer for Not On Your Life, from Emotion Factory Reset, which Metal Blade Records put out earlier this year. Costin Chioreanu of Twilight13media made the clip.
John Bush walked through the lyric. Guitarist Phil Sandoval had the phrase "you already know"; Bush rhymed off it and landed on John Doe, which he liked for carrying two meanings at once, the singer of X and a man nobody can identify. "There are a couple meanings to it," he said. "You already know, yet you don't know at the same time."
Sandoval then sent him "from dollars to donuts" and Bush answered with "Heavens to Betsy", which he kept for two reasons: his mother was called Betty, and Betsy Bitch is on the same label. He said the phrases sound like something said on the streets of Manhattan in 1950.
