The album Jorn Lande has just sung on for Tony Iommi is not their first attempt. It is their second, twenty one years later.
Lande told David E. Gehlke of Blabbermouth that he worked with the Black Sabbath guitarist on demos in 2004 and 2005, while the material that became Fused was taking shape. "I did several trips there, and we did demos together, but for various reasons, it didn't happen," he said. The record came out with Glenn Hughes singing on it.
He also described a conversation from the Heaven and Hell years, around the time Ronnie James Dio became ill, about whether he might sing part of a set if Dio could only manage some of it. Nothing came of that as a touring arrangement. Lande did sing at the memorial in London in 2010.
Two near misses and then, two decades on, a finished album. Musicians rarely say this part out loud, and it is worth hearing: the job that defines a career can be offered twice and declined once by circumstance before anybody gets to it.
