Kai Hahto spent a couple of days going through hundreds of cassettes and came out with rehearsal recordings from Wintersun, Rotten Sound and the rest of a thirty five year career.
He was looking for something else. Old Misantropia material that was never properly recorded was the reason he opened the boxes, ahead of the shows marking his thirty fifth anniversary as a drummer. "Luckily, I had all those stuff. I didn't throw anything away," he told Chaoszine.
What turned up instead included Rotten Sound rehearsals and his own practice tapes for the Wintersun debut and for Time. He admits that listening back left him wondering how he had played some of it decades ago, which from a drummer with that discography is worth more than any compliment he could pay himself.
The tapes also did a practical job. The reunited Misantropia were able to go back to songs that some of the other members no longer had any recording of at all, and the band have talked about recording material that was never released. Nothing has been confirmed.
Grindcore and folk metal and a thirty five year career, kept on cassette in a box, because nobody who played in that era could afford to assume it would be archived for them.
