Kai Hansen told Jimmy Kay of The Metal Voice that the next Helloween studio album is close to done. "There's actually a lot already in the box. We have already songs that are mixed, and the album is pretty much already, let's say 80 per cent is done."

The interview was arranged around his own record. Born With A Hammer, his solo album, arrives on 18 September through earMUSIC.

Hansen described the album as something that began without a destination. "I got bored and there was not much to do. So I sat down in my studio, locked myself up and started songwriting just for me, myself and I, without any purpose, and the outcome was nothing that was Helloween or Gamma Ray. I was not in the mood for power metal or stuff like that."

What came out instead pulls in several directions, and he is unbothered about it. He named Euro dance and Bob Marley among the things he had been listening to, the latter picked up in a hammock in Thailand.

The record was produced by Eike Freese with Hansen and Alexander Dietz, and recorded with Freese on guitar, Dietz of Heaven Shall Burn on bass, Carcass drummer Dan Wilding and Induction guitarist Tim Hansen. Ten songs, out on CD digipak, gatefold vinyl and a limited picture disc. Third single "Wait And See" is out now.
