King Diamond is getting a death metal tribute. Death Metal Promotion release The King's Curse: Death Metal Homage on 18 December, seven tracks, seven bands from six countries, one song each out of his solo records.
The choice of genre is the interesting part. King Diamond does not write death metal and never has; what he writes is theatrical heavy metal with a falsetto on top and a narrative underneath, and the albums this compilation draws on are built around voices that are supposed to be characters. Handing "A Mansion In Darkness" from Abigail to Gloamus means losing the falsetto and keeping the story.
That is a harder transposition than the usual tribute record, where a band plays the riff louder and shouts the chorus. Here the thing being covered is a performance rather than a song.
Seven songs across several albums, so the compilers have not simply worked through Abigail in order. Death Metal Promotion is the small label and promotional channel that has been pushing this corner of the underground for years.
