Konvent release their third album, Firesky, on 6 November through Napalm Records, and have put out the opening track, "Exorcise", with a video.
Five songs is the whole record. They run considerably longer than anything the Danish four-piece has released before, which is a deliberate trade: fewer pieces, more room inside each of them.
The other change is in what they are drawing on. The band made their name in death doom, and Firesky keeps that foundation while working black metal into the arrangements. "Exorcise" is built to demonstrate the shift. It opens slow and brutal, sitting squarely in doom, and then breaks apart in its final third.
Two records in, a band is still proving it can do the thing. On a third, the question is whether it can do something else. Konvent have answered by making the songs longer and the palette wider rather than by tightening up, which is the harder of the two available moves.
