Machine Head have released "Sutures" without announcing it first, which is not how this band usually works.
The timing is the odd part. Robb Flynn had spoken recently about the UNATØNED cycle coming to an end, and a surprise single lands in the gap where a band would normally go quiet for a year. Whether it closes that chapter or opens the next one has not been said.
Zack Ohren co-produced it with Flynn, the same pairing as on the album. Ohren's other work runs through All Shall Perish and Fallujah, the harder and more technical end of Californian metal, and his presence on a Machine Head record has pushed the sound in that direction before.
Releasing a song with no campaign behind it is a move available only to bands whose audience checks on them anyway, which after thirty five years Machine Head still have. The last few records have arrived with months of trailers and interviews, so the silence around this one is itself the announcement.
