Maria Brink has given her solo record a name. Speaking to Rock Sound, the In This Moment singer said the album will be called Coven and will arrive between Witch, the band's ninth, and whatever follows it.
“That's gonna be my first thing that I've done as a solo artist,” she said. “And then that gives Chris and I some extra time to really perfect the next In This Moment album between the two.”
She has been circling the idea for a long time. In December 2017 she told Metal Hammer she was starting to write slowly, with no hard plans, and described what she had in mind: the obscure, intimate, quiet side of her, tribal drums and probably no distorted guitars. She was blunt about why it could not be a band record. Chris Howorth, she said then, would not want to make an obscure, artistic, dreamscaping album, because that is not who he is.
Nine years is a long gestation for a record that was always meant to be the soft one. That it is finally being made while the band is between albums, rather than instead of one, is the part that will reassure the people who were worried.
