Memories of a Lost Soul have released Shrine Of The Useless Gods, a song from Lost Memories, with a video made by the band's own drummer Gianfranco Logiudice.

The packaging is the part worth reading. The first edition of the album carries a second disc, The Darkest Live: ten songs recorded at the Mindhouse in Palermo that run through the band's catalogue from the start, put there to mark thirty years since they formed in Reggio di Calabria in 1995.

That is an unusual way to celebrate an anniversary. Most bands either release the live record on its own or put a bonus track on the new one; bolting a career retrospective to a new album tells anyone buying it that the two halves are meant to be heard together, which only works if the new songs can stand next to the old ones.

Seven albums in, what the band plays is still the same mixture: orchestration under the riffing, layered vocals, blast beats and sudden accelerations that break into melody. Shrine Of The Useless Gods is built out of all of it at once.
