Metallica have put out professionally shot footage of Leper Messiah from the fourth night of their Sphere residency, played on 10 October.
Of the eight songs on Master of Puppets, this is the one that has spent most of forty years off the setlist. It is not the obvious crowd piece and it does not have the riff everybody can hum, and for most of the band's career it has turned up once a tour at best.
Which makes it a sensible thing to film in a room built to be looked at. The Sphere residency has been releasing a song at a time, and the pattern so far has favoured the less expected choices: the ones a band plays because they are enjoying themselves rather than because the arena demands them.
The footage is streaming now, one more piece of a residency the band have been releasing in instalments rather than as a film. More nights remain.
