Mother of Graves have released "The Silent Weight of the Stars", the second song from The Light That Keeps Us, which Profound Lore Records puts out on 16 October on CD, vinyl and digitally. David Jaggar directed and cut the video.
Brandon Howe, who sings, describes the song as a reach for something that is not there: "The song explores a yearning for meaning and comfort in an estranged love, seeking salvation from sorrow through elusive memories of hope and longing." Chris Morrison, one of the two guitarists, put the writing of it more plainly: "We balanced immediate hooks with emotional depth, building a dynamic matched visually in a cinematic narrative capturing bleakness, mystery, and underlying hope."
Eight songs make up the album, the third from a band who started in Indianapolis in 2019 and who play melodic death doom of the kind that takes its time. The Periapt of Absence, the one before it, came eleventh in Decibel's albums of 2024. Howe sings, Chris Morrison and Ben Sandman play guitars, Corey Clark plays bass and Don Curtis drums, which is the first line-up of theirs to stay a quintet across a whole record.
