Nïsti have released Lua Mater, four tracks of synth doom, and the title comes from Lua Saturni, the Roman goddess to whom captured weapons were burned. For a record about grief in stages that is a more exact reference than most bands manage.
The structure follows the idea. Four songs, four layers of the same process, starting with "Saturn Takes Over" and a single melancholy guitar line before the riffs arrive. Arbjana Meta sings it, and the vocal is the lamenting kind rather than the roaring kind.
The synths are the part that distinguishes this from the rest of the genre. They sit behind the guitars as ambience rather than in front of them as melody, which keeps the record doom rather than turning it into something gothic.
Grief is usually written as a silent thing. The argument this EP makes, in its own description, is that inside a head it is loud, and four tracks is the right length to make that point without labouring it.
