Abysmal Growls of Despair have put out Growth as two videos, Pt. 1 and Pt. 2, because the song is too long to carry one. The piece comes from Torn, out now through Wormholedeath.
Splitting a single into two chapters is a strange decision everywhere except here. Funeral doom works by making the listener wait, and a video that asks the same patience of the eye as the music asks of the ear is at least consistent with what the record is doing.
The interesting choice on Torn is not the length, though. Hangsvart, who is the project, has put brass at the front of the melodies rather than the melancholy guitar lead the genre runs on, which gives the whole thing a ceremonial quality under the weight. Beneath it the guitars are tectonic, with ritual dark ambient and drone closing over the top.
The words were written by Jorg Puschmann and the artwork is by Patrick Corcoran. Metal Archives counts twenty eight full length albums under this name since 2013, which is a rate of production funeral doom is not supposed to allow.
