Ováte have released "Kutsumus", their first new music in eight years and the opening track from Rúin, out 6 November through Soulseller Records.
The album is built around a rotating cast: six songs, and a different guest vocalist on each one. Spellgoth of Horna sings on "Kutsumus". The rest of the record brings in H'grimmr of Helheim, Thomas S. Ovstedal of Cor Scorpii, Sanrabb of Gehenna, Odemark of The Last Eon and The Third Attempt, and Hoest of Taake.
At the centre of it are Aindiachai of Gorgoroth, who plays guitars and bass, and Brodd, formerly of Taake, on drums. The two kept the format that shaped their self-titled debut, surrounding an instrumental core with voices borrowed from the Norwegian underground and beyond it.
The rotation does not scatter the record. Sharp riffing, ritual rhythms and repetition hold a cold and ceremonial atmosphere across the six tracks, with each guest working inside it rather than against it.
