Peaceville have reissued Darkthrone's The Cult Is Alive for its twentieth anniversary, on limited marble vinyl and a limited cassette.
The choice of record is the point. Darkthrone spent the second half of the nineties and the start of the next decade on Moonfog, and this 2006 album was the one that took them back to the label that put out the albums everyone still argues about. A reissue of it is Peaceville restating ownership of the whole story rather than just the early part.
Two formats, both limited, and no streaming angle to speak of, which tells you who is expected to buy it. The cassette is not nostalgia in this corner of the genre so much as the format the music was traded on in the first place, and a label that prints a small number of them knows the audience will clear the run.
Anniversary editions are the quietest money in metal. Nothing has to be recorded, the artwork exists, and a catalogue album earns again twenty years after the invoices for it were settled.
