Plague of Angels have released Live at Huddersfield Town Hall as a live album and as a full concert video. It was recorded on 5 December last year with the organist David Pipe at the hall's own instrument.
The band call the idea Organic Metal, and the distinction they keep making is worth taking seriously: the organ is not laid over the songs, it is written into them. On a pipe organ that changes the physics of the thing. The instrument moves air through a room rather than through a speaker, which means the low end arrives as pressure, and a band standing in front of one has to arrange around it rather than above it.
"The scale, atmosphere and emotion of this performance encapsulate everything we've been striving to achieve," the band said.
They have been doing this in public for two years. The debut single "What Lies Beneath" came in 2024, they became the first metal band to play on BBC's The One Show, and a church performance with organ drew notices in The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph. A sold out night at York Minster followed. The project began with guitarist Mark Mynett working with Pipe, who is the organist at Leeds Cathedral.
The line-up is Emilie Nox singing, Mynett and Oz Wright on guitars, Jeff Singer on drums and Caroline Campbell on bass and piano.
