Power Trip have two new songs out, Precinct 3 and Scavenger, and they are the first new music the band has released since Nightmare Logic in 2017. SiriusXM played them before they went online.
Nine years is a long gap, and most of the reason is known. Riley Gale died in 2020, the band stopped, and it took until 2024 for them to play a full set again with Seth Gilmore singing. Everything since has been live. These are the first recordings on the other side of that.
Blake Ibanez co-produced them with Jacob Hansen, who also mixed and mastered, and the choice says something about what the band wanted. Hansen has The Black Dahlia Murder and Volbeat on his sheet, which is the clean modern end of heavy music, but he also came up through the late eighties extreme metal underground.
Chris Ulsh described the brief in those two halves. Hansen knows how to make the big records, but he comes from the same place the band does, and the band is hard to please because they want something that sounds current and above all want it to sound like themselves, however that turns out.
Two songs is not an album and the band has not announced one. After nine years it is the more careful way to come back, and SiriusXM getting them first suggests nobody involved is treating this as a small release.
