Saor release Caledonia tomorrow, 6 November, through Season of Mist, and every one of its five songs is an older one made again.
Aura, The Awakening, Carved in Stone, Hearth and Tears of a Nation all carry MMXXVI after the title, which is the clearest way of saying what this is. The oldest of them, Carved in Stone, comes from the 2013 debut, made when this was one man with a drum machine and very little money.
Andy Marshall has been firm that it is not nostalgia, and the argument holds: these songs were written for an arrangement he could not afford at the time, with the pipes, strings and voices that the records since have been able to carry.
Five songs is short for a project whose albums usually run past an hour, which suggests the point is the versions rather than the length. Season of Mist have given it a full release rather than a bonus disc, which is the other way a label can treat a record like this.
