Shunt have released Mesenteric Torsion, their first album, with no label behind it: digital, cassette and CD on the same day.
Twelve tracks and not one of them reaches three minutes. The shortest, "Nitrogrenous Fumes Engulfment", runs fifty three seconds. That arithmetic is the form working as intended rather than a band running out of ideas, and the whole record goes by in roughly the length of a support slot.
The titles are a medical dictionary pushed through a grinder, "Portosystemic Shunt" to "Necrotizing Fasciitis", with "Force Fed Horse Dewormer" at the end for anyone who wondered whether the band were paying attention to the last few years.
Eight releases in and still unsigned, which in grindcore is less a sign of being overlooked than of not needing anyone. Cassettes cost almost nothing to make, the audience is small and committed, and a band can run the whole operation itself.
