The Eternal have released Obscured Horizons with a lyric video, through Reigning Phoenix Music.
Mark Kelson has been running this band out of Melbourne since 2003, and what they do has never fitted the Australian scene around it. While the rest of the country was building a reputation for extremity, The Eternal were writing slow, melodic, openly sad music in the lineage of Anathema and Katatonia, with clean vocals and a guitar tone that mourns rather than threatens.
That has been an unfashionable thing to do for most of two decades and it has given the band a long, quiet catalogue that rewards people who find it. A lyric video is a plain way to present a song like this: the words matter and nothing is hidden behind them.
A label of this size putting it out suggests more is coming. Nothing has been announced.
Reigning Phoenix have been picking up bands from this end of the genre steadily. An Australian act two decades into a quiet career is not the obvious commercial bet, which is what makes it the interesting one.
