The Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas opens an exhibition dedicated to Motörhead and Lemmy Kilmister on Friday 2 October.
The exhibition holds personal items from Lemmy's collection, including photographs and handwritten lyrics. The part that separates it from a display case is the rig: visitors can plug in and play Lemmy's Rickenbacker bass through the Marshall stack he used, rather than look at it behind glass.
That equipment is the reason the band sounded the way they did. The Rickenbacker through Marshalls produced a volume that fans still describe as the loudest thing they ever stood in front of.
The museum's framing puts Motörhead in punk as much as in metal, which is closer to the truth than most retrospectives manage. Lemmy played bass with the Damned and was a fixture of the British punk scene, and the band's speed fed directly into Pennywise, Rancid and Lagwagon.
Motörhead records will be stocked at Vinyl Threat, the museum's record shop, with exclusive merchandise in the gift shop. Three Star Punk Bar hosts an opening night with Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records on the decks.
The Punk Rock Museum sits at 1422 Western Avenue and opened in April 2023.
