Tommy Johansson, who fronts Majestica and spent years playing guitar in Sabaton, has put out a metal version of Everybody (Backstreet's Back).

The original is from 1997 and is built on a vocal hook and a drum machine, which makes it better raw material than it sounds. What the arrangement does is take the parts that were already theatrical, the choral refrain and the mock horror of the video, and give them the instrumentation they were always pretending to have.

It follows a power metal reading of Stayin' Alive, which runs on the same principle. These covers have become a parallel career for him, and the reason they work is that the jokes are not at the expense of the songs. He treats a pop hook as something worth playing properly, which is also what Majestica do with a key change.

The band are on Nuclear Blast and have three albums out. Johansson formed them in 2019 out of the ashes of ReinXeed, and the symphonic power metal he writes there is the same craft, pointed at his own material instead of somebody else's.
