Tony Iommi has released From The Dark, and the opening track "Over The Violent Sun" went out with it as a lyric film.
The names around him matter. Jorn Lande sings and co-wrote every song on it, which makes this a partnership rather than a guitarist's solo record with a hired voice. Becky Baldwin plays bass and Karl Brazil drums, and Iommi produced it with Mike Exeter, who has worked on his records for twenty years.
Lande is the interesting choice. He is the most Dio-shaped singer in European metal, and putting him in front of Black Sabbath's riff writer invites exactly the comparison it invites. The album broke twenty one years of solo silence when it was announced.
That it exists at all is worth marking. Iommi has spent most of the last decade on a cancer diagnosis, a farewell tour and the death of Ozzy Osbourne, and the record is the first thing he has released under his own name since all of it.
