Trivium have named the eleventh album. Crown in the Grave comes out on 20 November through Roadrunner Records, and the title track is out with a video by Pavel Trebukhin.
In September the band put out the first song from this record and had neither a title nor a date for it. Both arrived today, along with the thing that explains the title: Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood, the film that moves Macbeth to feudal Japan, and from there into Japanese horror and cinema more broadly. A crown in a grave is what that story ends with.
Paolo Gregoletto put the problem of an eleventh album better than most bands manage. It is easy at this point to rest on what you have done, or to reinvent for the sake of it, and what they wanted was the space between the two: everything learned and everything that makes the band what it is, arranged in ways they had not tried.
Twenty seven years in, with the same four men for most of the last decade, that is the only interesting answer available.
