Turnstile's free show near the Washington Monument on 24 October drew an estimated sixty thousand people, according to figures given by the organisers, and the fundraiser attached to it had passed 230,000 dollars by the following day.
Both numbers come with conditions. The donation total is live and will keep moving, and the crowd figure has not been audited by anyone outside the event. What is not in question is the scale: a hardcore band from Baltimore filled the ground in front of a national monument, for free, on a Saturday.
The money goes to relief work in Palestine, Sudan and Lebanon, through a campaign run with Human Concern International. The show was announced as a benefit from the start, and the total had already cleared 150,000 dollars before the first song.
Brendan Yates spoke to the crowd during a set that took in "BIRDS", "MYSTERY", "HOLIDAY", "BLACKOUT" and "NEVER ENOUGH". He also stopped to pull a fan out of the hands of security and onto the stage.
It was the last date of the band's North American run.
