Vetten Äpärät have released a video for "Äiti", the first song from Virkos Veren Kasteesta, a second album due next year and the first thing they have put out since 2016.
The title means mother, and the song is about a child growing up in a violent home who builds a fantasy world to survive it. That is a heavier subject than folk metal usually carries, and the band have not dressed it up: the fantasy in the song is a defence, not an adventure.
The album continues the themes of the debut, Syntyi Talven Kyynelistä, which came out in 2016 and dealt with the northern wilderness and the human urge to master it. Ten years between two albums is long enough that most bands do not come back at all.
They formed in Helsinki in 2007, and the line-up is Sami Ferm on vocals, who writes the music, with Anton Nisonen on drums, Leo Lemmetty on guitar and Aleksi Kulmala playing lead.
