Vingulmork have released a lyric video for Krigserklaering, which translates as declaration of war, from Barmhjertighetens Fallitt. The album came out earlier this month and is the Oslo band's newest full-length after the 2019 EP Avgrunn.
They sit in Scandinavian black metal without staying inside it. The bite of thrash and the weight of death metal go into the same machinery, and what comes out has grown harder and more involved over the years without losing the rawness of the early material. Dark melodies cut through the harshness rather than soften it, which is the part that has kept them recognisable.
The band write from anger, anguish and despair, and say so plainly, but they do not restrict themselves to it: broken dreams and shattered optimism are as much the subject as fury is. On a record they call their most forceful, a song named after a declaration of war is the obvious place to start.
