Virologist have put out a video for Maimed by the Therianthrope, from Subjugation of Anthropoid Forms, which New Standard Elite release on 13 November.
Eight songs in twenty seven minutes, and the way it was made is the part worth noting. Emrys Mellinger and Ethan Shadman wrote, recorded and mixed most of it across three months last summer in their rehearsal room in Oxnard, in sessions the band describe as having pushed them close to exhaustion.
The reference points they name are an education in themselves: Deeds Of Flesh, Enmity, Inherit Disease, Orchidectomy, Pustulated, Mortal Decay and Defeated Sanity. That is the Californian brutal death lineage and the European technical one in the same list.
What they say they want from the genre is unusual. Rather than treat it as a set of rules, they call it a medium for everything else they are interested in, and they put sincerity ahead of extremity.
The band formed in 2023 and produced the record themselves. Decibel premiered the video on 4 November.
