Voivod have licensed their world to a video game, and the free demo of it runs from 19 to 26 October. Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior is a run and gun Metroidvania in handcrafted pixel art, due on PC and consoles in early 2027.
Band licensing deals are usually merchandise with a logo on it. This one is the other arrangement, where the licence is the setting rather than the brand: the post nuclear future, the mutating warrior, the biomechanical landscapes and the fractured dimensions are Away's artwork and Piggy's lyrics turned into level design, and a player who has never heard the band will still be walking through the sleeve of Dimension Hatross.
That is a more valuable asset than a T shirt, and it is one almost no other band in this genre owns. Forty years of a single illustrator building one continuous visual world is why there is something here to license at all.
The demo carries two gameplay modes, which for a free trial a year out is a studio asking which of the two people prefer before the game is finished.
