The New Wave of British Heavy Metal ran from roughly 1978 to 1982 and rebuilt the music from the pub upward. Hundreds of bands pressed singles themselves, Sounds printed their names, and out of that traffic came Iron Maiden, Diamond Head and Venom. Almost everything after it is downstream.
